According to the Third Closed Beta, there are some new information was released:

If you want to access the Abyss, you are expected to complete a mission which is automatically given at aion powerleveling 25. After completing the access mission for the Abyss, you may gain some aion abyss points and use the Abyss Gates located in: Elyos at Verteron and Eltenen, Asmodian at Altgard and Morheim, Fortress Sky: Verteron, Altgard, Morheim, Eltnen: Fortress Underground. It is under the elevator. (aion abyss point power leveling )

•     The Abyss zone contains monsters of levels 25 ~ 40, plus a total of 9 floating island groups and Fortresses.

•     there are three sections covering lower, middle and upper sections in the abyss zone. Upon entering the Abyss, you will start from your Faction bind aion point in the lower aion power leveling. These initial bind points are protected by an Aetheric Field and they could prevent the enemy Faction from passing through with a near-instant death attack.

•     Around the Fortresses are 31 artifacts claimable by defeating their guarding Protectors.

•     Every artifact has a special effect that will help you in Fortress Battles and while the players are adventuring in the Abyss.
